These things were worn out and washed up but they were not always useless. But I also think of the things I have found from the sea: the fishing boat, the seal, the “ambergris”. I think of the things I have lost: my compass, stolen laptop, two shoes – one in the canal, one out of the door of a moving car – my boyfriend. I was washed up: no longer buoyant, battered and storm-tossed. When I first came back to Orkney I felt like the strandings of jellyfish, laid out on the rocks for all to see. My options were ever decreasing and I didn’t know where to turn, desperately seeking comfort in sexual encounters and obsessive memories. My once promising future, for which I’d moved to London, was turning into bitterness and frustration. I was out of work, living in a tiny room in east London, not getting invited out, heartbroken and drinking alone. ![]() It stung because at that point it was fairly true. ![]() A few years ago, I drunkenly got into an argument with someone I shouldn’t have. ![]() ![]() The stories all tie into the original series but can also be read as standalone graphic novel adventures. In “Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy”, Karen Abbott captures the spy-novel quality of Van Lew’s life, along with the undercover lives of three other famous Civil War-era women. Not only did she hide Northern soldiers in a secret room on the top floor of her mansion but she also passed messages to Union prisoners by using a hidden compartment in a chafing dish, employed a special cipher to send messages to agents in Washington, D.C., about Confederate troop movements and wore disguises to accomplish her espionage work. ![]() A wealthy society woman living in Richmond, Va., during the Civil War, Van Lew engaged in extensive undercover work for the Union - right under the noses of the Confederacy. The skill in the writing is that none of the naivety, impetuousness, fearlessness or difficulty of youth has been lost - we still travel from bird to bird and from place to place with the 18-year old Kaufman, can share with him his hopes, plans and passions. The fact that the book has been written from the perspective of an older man looking back on his younger self give the words so much more gravitas and meaning. ![]() ![]() This Christmas I finally got hold of a copy and, over the past two days, have done so. Over recent months, birder Mervyn Jones has implored me to do so, as it is a book that he holds in the highest regard. I was aware of this book, a modern birding classic, but had not read it. It was not until 1997 that it was dusted down and, with the help of professional editors and his own growth as a writer, it was published. He wrote an account of those 12 months directly afterwards, but was so disappointed with the result that he hid the finished manuscript in a box. Back in 1973, an American teenage birder by the name of Kenn Kaufman spent the year birding across North America, in an attempt to see more species of bird in a calendar year than anybody had recorded before. ![]() ![]() He chooses wisely with the highly domesticated “king of fish”, salmon the unlikely farmed “holiday fish”, sea bass the industrially persecuted “everyday-fish”, cod and, finally, the powerful, wild and sushi-providing bluefin tuna. Instead, in the same vein as popular food writer Michael Pollan who focused on “a natural history of four meals” in the best-selling Omnivore’s Dilemma, Greenberg hones in on four key fish species that are representative of humankind’s relationship with fish. It is easy, therefore, for anyone writing to the “average modern seafood eater” about sustainable fish to get caught up in complex data and tricky scientific names. Humans have already catalogued 230,000 species of marine life, some of which are abundant and some of which are near extinction. Greenberg provokes fish-catchers and fish-eaters to rethink everything they ever thought about fish: there are not plenty of fish left in the sea and no, aquaculture alone is not the answer and no, that salmon is neither wild, nor fresh, nor sustainable. “What we have seen up until now, with both the exploitation of wild fish and the selection and propagation of domestic fish, is a wave of psychological denial of staggering scope.”Īmerican author and passionate fisherman Paul Greenberg does not mince his words in his New York Times bestseller Four Fish: the Future of the Last Wild Food. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our website is an extension of what we offer in store.
